Bleeding Control Kits: Can They Save Car Accident Victims?

Posted on in Car Accidents

Illinois personal injury lawyer, Illinois wrongful death attorney, Illinois car accident lawyer,Automobile accident fatalities can be caused by a wide range of injuries, including head trauma and damage to internal organs, but severe bleeding is the number one cause. It is also fairly preventable, if immediate action is taken to control the bleeding. A city in Maryland has set its sights on giving the community the tools and resources it needs to take that action through the placement of “bleeding kits” throughout the community. But just how effective is this initiative likely to be? And will Illinoisans see similar initiatives in the near future?

“Stop the Bleed” Initiative

The “Stop the Bleed” initiative is based on one simple principle: stop the bleeding and potentially save a life. Education, resources (including posted signs), and kits that include everything needed to provide basic first aid to bleeding accident victims are all a part of the plan. More than 100 equipped kits are expected to be placed in community areas, including libraries, schools, and community centers, and senior citizen centers. Most will be placed near AED units that are already available.

Community Education and Will Critical to Success

Before the initiative can even have a chance at being successful, members from the community must step forward and be willing to learn and take action. This could be somewhat problematic, considering the fact that CPR training is generally sought after only be people who have professions in which they might actually need to use it (daycare providers, teachers, lifeguards, health care professionals, etc.). But even this low level of involvement could save lives, if the resources are readily available to those that are willing and capable of using them.

Placement of the Kits Not Especially Beneficial for Auto Accident Victims

While the idea of placing kits in large or public centers may be especially beneficial for those that are involved in tragic events, like shootings, natural disasters, or acts of terrorism, the placement may not be all that beneficial for those involved in automobile accidents. A large percentage of accidents happen at night or in the early morning hours, when many of the placement locations might be closed. And there is no guarantee that the accidents would even occur close enough to a placement location for the kits to be readily available for those willing and able to help victims.

It should be noted, however, that even one life saved – a life of someone who happened to have an accident in the day, near a placement center – makes the deployment of the “Stop the Bleeding” kits beneficial. As such, the initiative is a commendable one, and one that should expand across the country. But, hopefully, the expansion will also ensure more convenient placements (gas stations, local merchant stores, etc.) for auto accident victims. Even better would be if these kits would be supplied to anyone who achieves certification or attends a class; that way, they could be carried inside of vehicles and readily available at all times.
