Waukegan Pedestrian Accident Lawyer

On February 4, a 15-year-old pedestrian was fatally injured when she was struck by a drunk driver in Chicago Ridge. The young girl was a student at Oak Lawn’s Richard High School. The very next morning, a 20-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle near the Rush University Medical Center. According to Chicago police, the woman suffered a broken hip and was treated at Chicago’s Stroger Hospital.

For pedestrians in the greater Chicago area, the risk of being struck by a motor vehicle is very serious and all too familiar. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, more than 4,600 pedestrians were injured in car accidents in 2016 across the state. Of those injuries, 150 ultimately proved fatal.

In total, 5,987 pedestrians were fatally injured in motor vehicle collisions throughout 2016 alone. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this represented a nine percent increase in total pedestrian fatalities in comparison to 2015.

With an increased number of Chicagoans out to enjoy the summer months, this time of year represents an increased risk of pedestrian accidents. b2ap3_thumbnail_child-pedestrian-fatalities-Waukegan.jpgOn April 19, a two-year-old boy was fatally injured while crossing the street in West Englewood. The two-year-old victim was holding his aunt’s hand when a van turned off of 71st Street onto Damen Avenue. The vehicle struck both pedestrians. This latest tragedy serves as a stark reminder that children are some of the most susceptible pedestrian accident victims when hit by vehicles.

In 2016 alone, just under 6,000 pedestrians lost their lives in automobile accidents throughout the country. The alarmingly high number of fatalities marks an 11 percent increase in statistics from 2015.

The most worrisome aspect of pedestrian injuries is the fact that young children tend to be one of the most impacted demographics. Roughly 15 percent of all pedestrians injured annually are children aged 14 years or younger.

Waukegan personal injury attorneys, pedestrian fatalities, automobile accidents, pedestrian accident risks, pedestrian injuriesAccording to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) pedestrian fatalities rose by 11 percent from 2015 to 2016, and smartphone technology was considered the primary culprit.

As drivers and pedestrians continue to utilize their mobile devices while traveling, the fatality rate for pedestrians continues to climb. The 11 percent increase in fatalities from 2015 to 2016 marks the largest single year rise in the history of the United States. Equally concerning, the overall death count of just under 6,000 is the single largest annual pedestrian fatality count in over two decades. The commonly held notion that pedestrians are choosing a safer method of travel by electing to walk has become factually incorrect, as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than than automobile occupants to suffer fatal injuries each trip.
